Mount Baker Preschool is a cooperative preschool. All Co-op Classroom parents work in the classroom. (Co-op Preschool parents don’t work in the classroom and pay a higher tuition.)
All families (both Co-op Classroom and Preschool model parents) are assigned a job role outside the classroom to help manage the school. You will find an overview of the different committees, job roles and tasks below. Please communicate your first and second preference on the application form. We will try as best we can to accommodate your preference.
The term of the committee positions is one year. The board may decide to alter or add jobs if appropriate. Returning families can serve on the board.
Parent Board Positions: 5 families:
2 Co-Chairs, Parent Coordinator, Secretary, Treasurer
Board members work together to facilitate the administration of the preschool. The board meets every month a week or so before each scheduled parent meeting, as well as meeting with and helping coordinate other parent jobs and committees.
Fundraising: 3 families
Time Commitment: Seasonal intensity, with the most hours in preparation for the Spring fundraising event.
Coordinates the Halloween community building and fundraising event for the school, as well as the Spring fundraising event, including procurement of donations for the silent auction. Funds go to support the preschool’s financial aid fund and contingency budget.
Publicity: 2 families
Time Commitment: Busiest times are around events (Halloween event and Spring auction) and in the late winter/early spring with school enrollment.
Coordinates and provides all publicity regarding fundraisers, School Tours, and public events. Uses social media (i.e. Facebook, online parent groups) and flyers to promote our preschool and advertise our upcoming events/fundraisers. Works with Fundraising Committee, Special Events Committee, Enrollment Coordinators, Technology/Communications Manager. Updates and produces Mount Baker Preschool brochure, as necessary. Supports Enrollment Coordinators with tables at preschool fairs.
Enrollment Coordinators: 2-3 families
Time Commitment: Bulk of work is January – March during enrollment season
Coordinates enrollment process with the teacher and co-chairs. Keeps track of families who submit applications. Prepares registration and School Tour materials. Frequently checks preschool email account during open enrollment. Represents the preschool during local preschool fairs.
Special Events: 2 families
Time Commitment: Seasonal intensity in October and spring time
Coordinates all field trips and school events including pumpkin patch visit, Halloween at Bradner Gardens, Lantern Walk, Winter Spiral, and Kubota Gardens visit. Helps plan a spring community building event.
Gardening: 2 families
Time Commitment: VERY seasonal, with spring and summer being the busiest time. Requires ability to work in summer months when school is not in session.
This job starts in June, before school begins. Maintains cheerful garden space and a plethora of edibles in the Children’s Garden at Bradner Gardens. Waters and weeds regularly. Attends monthly Bradner Gardens
meetings. Coordinates community work parties with preschool.
Photography: 1 family
Time Commitment: Steady work throughout school year
Photographs field trips and special events. Coordinates with publicity committee to help provide promotional materials for our school and to advertise our events. Makes photos accessible online to other parents. Makes a yearbook of photos with copies for the school and all the families to be distributed on the last day of school. Must be able to attend day time and evening events.
Technology Communications Managers: 2 families
Time Commitment: Steady work throughout school year
This role manages our school’s technology including: updating our website, updating our blog with posts from various committees (WordPress format), keeping our Facebook page updated as well as working with other committees (Publicity, Fundraising and Enrollment) to ensure that we are a visible and well trafficked website and that our information is current and accurate.
Maintenance: 1 family
Time Commitment: Occasional, on-call. Must be prepared to respond in event of an emergency.
Maintains interior and exterior spaces and equipment. Organizes repairs in communication with the teacher. Maintains 2 fire extinguishers, exit lights. Maintains and cleans vacuum cleaner and other tools and equipment (mops, sponges, etc.) as needed. Organizes cleaning of heating equipment when needed.
