We’ve been learning about the importance of how “less is more” when it comes to parenting and how to parent our children in a way that empowers them but does not overwhelm them. Simple is not to be confused for as easy; in our high-paced, ever-shifting culture—slowing down can be overwhelming and unfamiliar. But, it really is all about taking one small step everyday. The Less-Is-More Rules of Simplicity Parenting

As parents, we are tasked with both providing direction and finding a center for our family. But, when today’s children are living amidst a barrage of mental, physical, and digital clutter, how are we to navigate a world of too much stuff and too many choices? To sort out how the power of less results in calmer, happier children, we turned to internationally renowned family consultant and Simplicity Parenting author Kim John Payne.
“Parents need to relax,” says Payne, who encourages mothers and fathers to “question the ‘new normal’ of the fever pitch of life and introduce small, doable changes” to find a rhythm for their family. By backing off and consciously saying “no thanks,” Payne claims parents and children will “gain time, connectivity, security, and ease.” Here, 10 takeaways from his Simplicity Parenting philosophy. Which will you implement into your family life?
Avoid overscheduling. Dialing back your family’s activities is an obvious place to start. All manner of extracurriculars are available to children, many beginning at very early ages. But, by nature, young children are not equipped for the to and fro that comes with a jam-packed, hurried day. (Is anyone, really?) Furthermore, the pressures of participating, performing, competing, and, particularly, excelling are demanding. “Not everyone is going to be exceptional at everything they do,” says Payne. “What we want for our children, truly, is engagement. We want their love of the cello to grow, to evolve, and endure throughout their lives, whether or not they perform, whether or not they are ever exceptional cellists.” By moderating extra activities and focusing on essentials, you allow your family to function at a sustainable pace.
Embrace ordinary days. Avoid striving to make every day exceptional for your child. Every day is not exceptional, and setting that expectation is ill-advised. “When every note is a high note, children loose the ability to fully engage in the present and to regulate their own time,” says Payne. “Ordinary days are the sustaining notes of life.” Learning to appreciate the simple pleasures of an ordinary day builds character and encourages children to live life with an appreciation for the moment.
Reduce toys. Simplifying play makes parenting easier. “The number of toys your child sees, and has access to, should be dramatically reduced,” suggests Payne. Discard toys that are broken, multiples (no one needs seven stuffed bunnies), or just plain annoying. Keep open-ended toys, such as blocks and simple dolls, and a small selection of art supplies. Allow a few favorite toys to be accessible to your child at any time. Beyond that, use baskets and bins to reduce visual clutter and store toys that can be pulled out to play with. Require children to play outside often, and, perhaps most importantly, give them the gift of boredom. Boredom facilitates basic creativity and resourcefulness. Create a simple, safe play environment for your children and then just let them be.
Cut back screen time. Payne encourages parents to minimize screens—televisions, computers, phones—in the home, particularly while children are young. Early childhood is a time of rich, complex growth, explains Payne. This growth is fostered in a few basic ways, including interacting with other humans and exploring the environment. Screen time directly takes away from that. Payne boldly recommends removing televisions from the home all together. When that can’t be done, he suggests moving TV’s and computers out of the family room and into the parents’ bedroom, a den, or family office. He advises that children under seven not use computers, video games, or handheld devices, and that children should not have television in their bedrooms. At the very least, he advocates following the American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines—children under two should not be exposed to television or videos and that exposure should be limited for those two and up. Simplifying in this way promotes active engagement with the world, Payne claims, and will expand your family’s free time, making room for new, fun leisure habits.
Eat together. Research has shown that children reap all variety of benefits from regular family meals—better health, better language skills, less addiction, less depression, the list goes on. The ritual of cooking, eating, and conversing creates a center for your children to orbit around. Be it breakfast, lunch, or dinner, the family meal is a custom to preserve. Start by simplifying your food choices. Be discerning about the food you bring into your home. Selecting foods with simple, natural ingredients paves the way for lifelong health habits for your family. If your children are used to more processed foods, expect about one month to retrain their palate. Encourage kids to try a new food at least eight times before allowing them to give it up. Next, simplify what’s for dinner by creating a recurring menu—Monday pasta, Tuesday rice, Wednesday soup, and so forth. Predictable meals are simpler and easier to prepare, everyone eats the same thing, and the regularity will have rooting effects on your children. (And when you decide to dine out or otherwise switch things up, it will be a treat!) When it comes time to prepare a meal, involve your kids. Taking the time to let young children help out in this way makes for better helpers as they grow. Involving them in meal prep also helps to transition them from whatever they may have been doing beforehand to sitting at the table, and it gets them invested in the meal, making them less likely to refuse it. Before the eating begins, give your meal a symbolic start—a blessing, moment of silence, or lighting of a candle. This small moment of calm will be particularly affecting to a child who is talking and moving most of the day. Relax into it, give thanks, and allow your attention to deepen. Sit and eat with your children, don’t allow anyone to leave the table until everyone is done, and make cleaning up afterward a chore shared by all. But don’t concern yourself with the details. Simply sharing time in this way creates connection and rhythm for your family. There will be off nights, but, as Payne points out, simple, consistent family meals will say to your children: “This is what we do together, and mean to one another, good day, good meal, or bad.”
Talk less. A calm and consistent manner says more to children than words ever could. Avoid overmonitoring and overinvolving. Step back, and give your children space. Often, a quick connection from a reliable, trusted parent is all a child needs to feel acknowledged. Demonstrate humility, and make the best use of your words by speaking honestly and kindly. (Before speaking, Payne recommends asking yourself: Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary?) Additionally, don’t question young children about their feelings. Before about 10-years-old, a child’s emotions are unconscious and undifferentiated; they do not have the capacity or vocabulary to express them. Pushing for an explanation is invasive and makes them nervous. Payne explains, “When we push a child toward an awareness they do not have yet, we transpose our own emotions, our own voice, on theirs. We overwhelm them. For the first nine or ten years children learn mainly through imitation. Your emotions, and the way you manage them, is the model they ‘imprint,’ more than anything you say or instruct about emotions.” Encourage this growth of emotional intelligence by not saying too much and allowing them privacy with their feelings. Instead of probing with questions, allow parental instinct to guide you. Simply be available and willing to listen. And, as Payne reminds us, “As your kids begin to notice that you are saying less, they will listen more.”
Filter out the adult world. Payne discourages speaking too openly to children about too much. Sharing adult concerns with them, even in the spirit of honesty, can be harmful. When something is beyond a child’s frame of reference, they are not able to process it in context. “Not only do they lack context for the information, they lack the foundation that childhood slowly provides,” he says. “The foundation of years of relatively safe observation, interaction, and exploration. Too much information does not ‘prepare’ a child for a complicated world, it paralyzes them.” There is a value in not sharing. By acting as a filter for children, parents reduce stress and establish boundaries. “[Children] need to know that some things are for adults to discuss; they are not for kids to hear, or to comment on,” says Payne.
Sleep. “Sleep is the ultimate rhythm,” contends Payne. “Most children between two and six need eleven hours of sleep. From ages six to eleven, some kids can do well with ten hours, but that number will go up again—to eleven or even twelve hours—during adolescence.” For a variety of reasons, the value of sleep cannot be understated. If bedtime is a battle in your house, incorporating Payne’s concept of “pressure valves” into your days can help ease the transition into sleep. A pressure valve is simply time built into the day to decompress. Naps are the obvious choice. “A quiet rest time during the day is something to hold on to for as long as possible,” says Payne. Even older children (and adults!) benefit from the habit of a bit of solitary quiet time during the day. Other opportunities to allow children a moment to relax include an after-school snack, that moment of silence before dinner, a bedtime story, or even a project. Payne mentions simple things—digging a hole, building with blocks, catching lizards. “Any activity a child can ‘lose himself in’ allows for a release of tension, and the mental ease needed to process the day’s events,” he says. Providing your children with these opportunities for release encourages the security and connection that they need to surrender to sleep.
Work together. In a two-parent household, share in the parenting tasks of daily life. It is common for mothers to become overinvolved, but a balance of involvement benefits both the children and the partnership. “Of the many parenting tasks that must happen every day, dads need to move some to their side of the ‘full responsibility’ list,” says Payne. “That doesn’t mean that parents shouldn’t have some areas of shared responsibility, and spend time together with daily life tasks. But the work of child care can fill almost every crevice. And for one person to really get a break, to really let go of a task mentally and physically, the other must do it consistently, with no need for requests or reminders.” When each parent takes exclusive responsibility of several aspects of daily life, their understanding of their child, their child’s connection to them, and their relationship with one another deepen.
Value family time. A generation ago, setting aside a day for family at the end of the week was common. “That Sunday ‘feeling’ was usually one of increased quiet. It was very often a ‘family day,’ whether that meant the immediate family, or a bigger, extended family group sitting down for supper,” says Payne. “Many people avoided commerce, and the work of the week was put aside.” Today, when cell phones allow nearly everyone to be perpetually reachable, it seems increasingly harder to incorporate these moments, but parents should try. “Not all families can set aside a whole day of the week for quiet family time, but we can still carve out some moments. Doing so adds balance to busy days and establishes boundaries. As you refuse to answer the phone during dinner the message your kids get is ‘Right now, we’re together, sharing this meal.’” Create a ritual that works for your family, and enjoy your moment of pause.
Why the Ritalin Debate Is Asking the Wrong Question: Healing Our Kids’ Soul Fever With Simplicity
Parents across the country know something is wrong. All the hovering, anxiety, medicating, and overscheduling is giving voice to that parental instinct that knows when our kids and family life are in trouble. And it’s true, our kids are in crisis, victims of an undeclared war on childhood, drowning in a sensory tsunami, and because we love them so much, we worry, and we search for solutions, ignoring the voice in our heads telling us that something’s off when we greet our kids every morning with a pill to fix them. Indeed, something is wrong. But it’s not our kids. Our kids are as beautiful, feisty, gifted, and quirky as they have always been. What’s changed is their environment, and the levels of stimulation and stress we expect them to integrate.
In my decades of working with families around the world, I have seen thousands of children’s brilliant personalities — their funny, odd, remarkable, special talents, railroaded by stress, so much so that I came up with this simple equation: Quirk + Stress = Disorder, or what I call a soul or emotion-fever. And every parent already knows how to heal their child from regular, physical fever just as every parent knows how to heal their children’s soul fever. We don’t need to learn anything, or see a specialist or download an app. We apply our parental wisdom to our children’s hearts and minds; we do what we do naturally, when fever arises. Just as cumulative stress can lead to problems, even disorders, cumulative simplicity and balance can move the quirk in the direction of a child’s gift. Quirk + Simplicity = Gift.
Here are three stages of awareness and healing both kinds of fevers:
1. We Notice Something is Off
Some parents swear they can literally smell their children’s fevers as they come on, or they can sense that their child’s particularly fussy or whiny behavior is fever-induced. So, too, with soul fever. When a child gets stressed, on the brink of soul fever, their quirks become inflamed. They may feel emotionally stretched, or brittle or fresh. While it is natural and often wise to check out such behaviors with “experts,” we can also check in with ourselves and our children, the way we do with a fever we understand.
2. We Quiet Things Down
As soon as the thermometer validates our hunch, we know what to do. We close the blinds, make a bed on the couch, make some simple soup, clear our child’s calendar. What a relief. The entire family benefits from slowing down. To gauge our child’s soul fever, we need to pay very close attention to our internal thermometer, the one that tells us when our child is not him or herself. And the medicine is the same. Take it easy, simplify your child’s life, and in the process, allow the family to rest from all the stresses we think we can’t live without: all-out media assault, tight schedules, sugary, processed foods. We wouldn’t expect our child to heal from an illness by going about their daily lives, yet we are hesitant to make changes in the home that can benefit our overwhelmed kids. Why?
3. We Stay Close
Most parents don’t have to be told to stay close to their sick children. The desire to be near is instinctive. Unfortunately, in our culture, when our children are telling us they are hurting in other ways, we have learned to outsource the problem. Once we have ruled out any serious medical issues, soul-fevered kids don’t need second opinions or professional help; they need us. They need to rest in a natural state of bonding with their parents. It might take longer to heal a soul fever than the flu, but the end result will be the same: restored health, and an invigorated connection. By staying close to our feverish kids, we are learning about them and what they need, and boosting our entire family’s immunity to the diseases of an over-stimulated, fevered pitched world.
Seeing our kids suffer is painful and confusing, no doubt about it. It is because we care so much that we panic and look outside of ourselves for help. But treating soul fever at home, instead of a disorder in someone’s office leads to a greater connection between parents and kids and fewer reasons to become anxious and medicate. After all, the jury is still out on the long-term effects of these drugs. And my own research, a pilot study I conducted in 2000 testing a simplicity regime with children diagnosed with ADHD, found that 68 percent of the children went from clinically dysfunctional to clinically functional in four months.
Ultimately, it comes down to a choice. Parents need to decide whether they believe childhood is a fast-paced enrichment opportunity or a slowly unfolding experience. Can we unplug from the viral world for long enough to allow their kids’ disorders to flow back into their innate gifts, ready to be offered to the world in their own time, in their own way? I hope so. We need all the help we can get and this kind of help does not involve “adding” anything more, it is about “doing” less.
